James H. (Jim) Witt

James H. (Jim) Witt

James H. (Jim) Witt, 84, Kingsport, died Monday, December 15, 2014 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Jim was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church. He graduated from Hiwassee High School, Hiwassee College, and then from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a major in Agriculture.

He was retired from Armstrong Construction Company where he served as Treasurer. Prior to Armstrong, Jim owned and operated the Holston Feed store in downtown Kingsport. He also served in the U.S. Army, which included working at the Pentagon for several years. After he retired, Jim continued to stay involved and help others by volunteering at The Netherland Inn, The Shepard Center, and at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center where he made many close friends.

Jim and his wife of 56 years, Mary, lived in Kingsport for about 60 years. During this time, they raised a family, established friendships with many wonderful people, and actively participated in the community.

He was married to Mary Carr Witt, who died in 2006. He was the son of the late Rev. Ted R. Witt, Sr., and Vergie Parks Witt. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Metcalf.

Jim is survived by his two children, daughter, Susanna Hauk and husband, Greg, and their children Mosley, Parks, and McKenzie, all of Kingsport, and son, Teddy Carr Witt and wife, Leslie, and their children, Sarah and Alissa of Bakersfield, California; three siblings, Jacquelyn "Jackie" Mainous and husband, Chig, of Norton, VA, Rev. Ted R. Witt II and wife, Velma, of Maryville, TN, and Butch Witt of Decatur, TN; and one brother-in-law, Leroy Metcalf of Wisconsin.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with The Rev. Mickey Rainwater and The Rev. Jack P. Weikel officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

A family committal inurnment service will be held at the church Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be made to Hiwassee College, Witt/Parks Scholarship Fund, c/o Adam Reynolds, 225 Hiwassee College Drive, Madisonville, TN 37354 or the Holston United Methodist Home for Children, 404 Holston Dr., Greeneville, TN 37743.
