Jane R. McCown, 84, of Kingsport died Saturday, November 21, 2015, at Indian Path Medical Center. Born in South Carolina she lived in West Memphis, Arkansas, Jonesborough, Tennessee, and Colorado for two years before returning to Johnson City and was a resident of Kingsport for the last 59 years.
She was a member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church. She served as assistant pianist at Preston Hills Presbyterian Church for ten years. Jane taught piano for over 30 years and taught music at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church Kindergarten and directed the Cherub Choir. With her husband Ted, she volunteered at Holston Valley Hospital as pianist for Sunday services at Wilcox Hall for twelve years. She owned Unique Boutique with her husband, Ted, for 36 years.
She was an active volunteer at Exchange Place and served on the Board of Directors of the Exchange Place/Netherland Inn Association. She had also served on the Board of Directors of The American Cancer Society where she was an active participant in "The Relay for Life" and a "Reach to Recovery" volunteer. She also volunteered at Bays Mountain Park. She was a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a B.S. in Music, and was active in the band and music programs.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, James W. Rector and Jane Baldwin Rector.
She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Ted McCown of Kingsport; daughter, Sarah Jane McCown of Dalton, GA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mark and Sandy McCown of Gatlinburg; one niece, Amy McCown Seavy; one nephew, David McCown; and cousin, David Kenney and several other cousins.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Monte Vista Memorial Park in Johnson City, TN.
The memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church with Dr. Angus Shaw officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.
