Jane Virginia Berninghausen Sarnoff, 81, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2009, at her residence.

Jane was born on February 12, 1928, at Sartoria Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick W. and Lilian Knipe Berninghausen of New Hartford, Iowa; and by two brothers, David Knipe Berninghausen and wives Elizabeth 1st and Frances 2nd and William Harry Berninghausen and wife Jane Elizabeth.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Paul Edward Sarnoff, retired Vice President and Associate Actuary, Prudential Insurance, now living in Kingsport; and by three children, daughter Julie Kathryn Sarnoff Hyatt and husband John of Kingsport, daughter Sigrid Elaine Sarnoff Southerland and husband Larry of Winston-Salem, NC, and son, Burton Edward Sarnoff and wife, Edythe Ann Walmer Sarnoff of Aspers, PA. She also leaves three grandchildren, Margaret Jane Sarnoff and Felicity Anne Sarnoff of Aspers, PA, and Alice Elaine Hyatt Lane of Johnson City; and two great-grandchildren, Sylvia R. and Greta B. Lane.

Jane grew up in Iowa, married Paul E. Sarnoff in Iowa City, and was graduated from the University of Iowa in 1948 with a BA in Speech Pathology. The couple then lived until 1990 in New Jersey, where Jane was a Speech Pathologist at the Orange Orthopaedic Hospital, and then in the Public Schools of Bernards Township. In 1990, they moved to Kingsport.

She was a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church, University Women, the NEA, and Daughters of the American Revolution, having been descended from Christian Moser, Pvt., PA, Jacob Clemens, Pvt., PA, and Henry Bolton, Pvt., PA and VA. She was Sr. President and founder of Lord Stirling CAR of Basking Ridge. She was a member of Colonial Dames, a descendant of Quaker, Abraham Op Den Graef, who was a founding father of Germantown, PA in 1693 and one of four signers of America s first anti-slavery proclamation in 1688. She was a loving wife and mother.

Memorial services will be conducted at 2 pm Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Fall Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Tommy Haynes officiating.
