Jane Madden Snyder, age 79, died at the Holston Valley Medical Center October 28, 2011.
For over ten years, she fought a long hard battle against a rare cancer. She never showed any self-pity, never was discouraged and never lost her sense of humor.
Jane received her bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1953 from Flora MacDonald College. She was an educator all of her life even to her last days. She taught elementary school in Albany, GA, Athens, GA, Spencerport, NY and was an active substitute teacher in the Kingsport City Schools for many years. Jane was instrumental in helping to start the Kingsport Literacy Council and tutored students for a number of years.
It was Jane's hope that other cancer patients could learn from her example and the doctors who treated her could learn more about the rare cancer they were treating.
Jane was active in the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsport having taught Sunday school, serving as a deacon, President of the Women of the First Presbyterian Church and President of the Presbyterian Women of Holston Presbytery. She was the recipient of an Honorary Life Membership in Presbyterian Women.
Preceding her in death were her parents, William Roy Madden, Sr. and Mabel Ray Madden and one brother, Col. William Roy Madden, Jr.
She is survived by her husband of 58 ½ years, Robert G. Snyder of Kingsport; her sons, Robert G. Snyder, Jr. and wife Lisa of Elizabethton, TN, David W. Snyder and wife Susan of Haw River, NC.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 11:00am at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Grandfather Home for Children, P.O. Box 98, Banner Elk, NC 28604-0098.
