Janet Drennan Barnes of Kingsport, TN died on July 18, 2011 from injuries associated with a bicycle accident. She was 63 years old.
She was preceded in death by her parents John Poag Drennan and Louise McMekin Drennan of Elberton, GA.
Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Robert Lawrence Barnes; son, John Robert Barnes, and wife Jennifer of Decatur, GA; daughter, Brooks Barnes Pond, and husband David of Kingsport, TN; and son, David McMekin Barnes, and wife Whitney of Nashville, TN; and grandchildren, Drennan Adele Barnes, Duncan Merier Barnes, and Daniel Lawrence Pond.
Mrs. Barnes retired from the accounting department of Eastman Credit Union in Kingsport in 2010. She received a B.S. in Mathematics from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mrs. Barnes was a woman of tremendous faith and a dedicated member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church. At FBSUMC, she was a member of the Teammates class, Board of Trustees, Altar Guild, Stewardship and Finance Committee, Firewood Ministry, Kitchen Committee, Church and Society, and a former member of the Counseling Committee and the Administrative Board. Additionally, she volunteered as a Greeter and Usher and as a servant at Friendship Diner. Mrs. Barnes provided countless acts of kindness to individuals and institutions in need. She was an avid cyclist and enjoyed water-skiing, hiking, and cooking. Above all, Mrs. Barnes was a devoted wife and mother who lived life to the fullest.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 6th at First Broad Street United Methodist Church in Kingsport, TN with Rev. Mickey Rainwater officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
