Janis Brown Strickler

Janis Brown Strickler passed away at her home on Monday, September 25, 2017. Mrs. Strickler was born in Harmony Community, (Washington County, TN) on April 12, 1938 and grew up in the community where her family was an active part of the community. She graduated with honors from Fall Branch High School and with honors from ETSU in 1960 with a BS degree in Nursing. She worked briefly in Johnson City Medical Center (formerly Memorial Hospital) before moving to North Carolina and Virginia. She taught psychiatric nursing in Raleigh, NC before moving to Virginia where she worked at Halifax Community Hospital in South Boston, VA. After moving to Kingsport in 1971, she worked as an infection control practitioner from 1972-1997. She did additional studies in infection control at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology and the Annals of Internal Medicine as well as the American Journal of Nursing. She is listed in the Who's Who in American Nursing.

She worked with her husband, Carl L. Strickler in his ministry in three different churches in Virginia and Lynn Garden Baptist Church (Kingsport) and First Baptist (Fall Branch). Mrs. Strickler was a member and active participant of various committees and taught Sunday School in churches where she served.

Her parents, E.G. Brown and Wilma Bacon Brown preceded her in death as did a brother-in-law, Dana C. Strickler, and a sister-in-law, Pats Hensley and husband, Kenneth.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Rev. Carl. L. Strickler, Kingsport; daughter, Denise (Bruce) Milton, GA and son Michael (Debbie), Kingsport; her grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Strickler, Stephanie Lee Strickler, Carol-Ann Baird, Robert Michael Baird, brother and sister-in-law, John Thomas and Barbara Carter Brown, Fall Branch. Additionally she is survived by her sister-in-law, Anita Strickler (Clyde, NC) and Mark and Beverly Strickler (Fall Branch), and nephews and a niece.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5-7:00 pm at Lynn Garden Baptist Church. A memorial service celebrating her life will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Rick Meade officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted on Thursday at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church Cemetery, Fall Branch. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Lynn Garden Baptist Church, 301 May Street, Kingsport, TN 37665, or to Birmingham United Methodist Church, 15770 Birmingham Hwy, Milton, GA 30004.
