Jean Nesmith Beck

Jean Nesmith Beck was born in Kellogg, Iowa September 18, 1915 and passed away peacefully on May 28, 2011 at Holston Valley Hospital.

She graduated from the University of Iowa and taught in a one room school near Kellogg until she moved to Kingsport in 1940. She taught at Kingsport Junior High where she met her husband Robert F. "Bob" Beck. Jean has lived in Kingsport most of the time since then. She was a loving wife, mother, homemaker, grandmother and great grandmother.

Jean was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

During their retirement years Jean and Bob had a chair caning business and enjoyed many trips to search for antique chairs and participated in numerous arts and craft shows in East Tennessee. Her recent years have been filled with family and her hobbies. She was an avid Lady Vols basketball fan and never missed a game. She also enjoyed knitting and knitted hundreds of caps for the newborns at Holston Valley Hospital.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Robert F." Bob" Beck; her parents, Thomas A. and Florence Nesmith; and five brothers and sisters.

She is survived by son, James R. Beck and wife Louise of Kingsport; daughter, Jane B. Harris and husband Ben of Kingsport; grandchildren, Amanda Beck Johnson and husband Ryan of Anchorage, AK; Sam Beck and wife Kim of Knoxville, TN; Jeff Harris and wife Robin of Durham NC; and great-grandsons, William Beck of Knoxville TN; and Daniel Harris of Durham NC.

An entombment service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.
