Jean Hall Ellington, 94, of Kingsport, died Saturday, May 18, 2019, at her home after a long and fulfilling life. She was born in Greenback, Tennessee and grew up on her family’s farm in Blount County. She graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at a time when few women studied accounting. After college, she came to Kingsport where she worked as an accountant for Tennessee Eastman Company and met her future husband. She left Eastman to raise her children and became an active volunteer in school, church and community organizations. For many years, she prepared income tax returns for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and as a seasonal staff member of Hoover Harrison, CPAs.
Mrs. Ellington was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church for 70 years and a founding member of Greer Memorial Sunday School Class. She was a member of United Methodist Women and numerous committees of the Church. Most recently, she was a prolific knitter for the Stitch and Pray ministry. She also served Meals on Wheels and was a long-time volunteer with the Kingsport Chapter of the American Red Cross. Mrs. Ellington enjoyed traveling, golf, needlework, puzzles and basketball.
She was married to Edgar Worth Ellington, Jr. for 62 years until his death in 2012. Her parents, Gid Jackson Hall and Mary Goddard Hall, brother, Ralph Goddard Hall, and son-in-law Dan S. Duncan also predeceased her. She leaves her daughters and son-in-law, Ann Duncan of Memphis and Jane and Dan Dove of Kingsport, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of First Broad Street United Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, with Rev. Jack P. Weikel and Rev. Misti McCreary officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception at the Church following the service.
Her daughters are grateful for the kindness and tender care provided to their mother by her caregivers, hospice nurses, clergy, and pastoral care visitors in recent months. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest that memorials be made to First Broad Street United Methodist Church, 100 East Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37662.
