Jean Marie Hanz

Jean Marie Jackson Hanz, 73, died peacefully on August 26, 2019, at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Jean was born on February 4, 1946 in New Albany, Indiana, where she grew up and graduated from high school. She received a BA degree from Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Illinois and a Master in Social Work degree from the University of Houston, Texas. After college Jean worked for the Red Cross in Services to Military Hospitals during the Vietnam War in Texas, Japan and Okinawa and later worked for the Dallas County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Jean married Roger Hanz in 1974 and they had one son, Brian, who was born in 1978. After Brian’s birth, Jean became a stay-at-home Mom and later worked part-time as the Administrative Assistance at New Covenant UMC in Sunnyvale, TX. Upon retirement in 2004, Jean and Roger moved to Kingsport, Tennessee.

Jean was an avid quilter – extremely creative, talented and generous. Of a total of 164 quilts which Jean made, she gave 114 quilts as gifts: 43 baby quilts; 33 quilts to special friends; and 38 quilts donated to the Stitch and Pray Ministry at First Broad Street UMC and the Wounded Warriors.

Jean was preceded in death by her father and mother, Harold and Isabelle Jackson, and by her brother and sister, Glen Jackson and Joan Hottle. She is survived by her husband Roger, son Brian, daughter-in-law Athena, and two grandchildren, Lahna and Lily.

Jean will be cremated. A service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held Thursday, September 5, 2019, at 3:00 PM at First Broad Street UMC, 100 E. Church Circle, Kingsport, Tennessee. A reception will follow at the church. There will be a display of some of Jean's quilts in the Chapel which can be viewed before or after the Memorial Service.
