Jerry Parker Leonard, 76, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 14th, 2009.
He was born in Savannah, Georgia July 31st, 1932 to the late Lester B. and Nelle V. Leonard. He grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated North Fulton High School and Georgia Tech with a BS in Civil Engineering. He received a commission in the U.S Marine Corps, served during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1962
He worked for J.A Jones Construction Company in Charlotte, North Carolina for 21 years during which he had many jobs in and out of the United States. In Kingsport he was associated with Armstrong Construction Company and Barker Building Company. At age 70, he became a realtor and was an agent with Town and Country Realty.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church where he served in many positions: deacon, Sunday school teacher, children's worker, and choir member. He was also a Rotarian and a Gideon. He enjoyed singing and had been a member of S.P.E.B.Q.S.A. and Symphony of the Mountains Chorus.
Jerry Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Lester B. and Nelle V. Leonard, brothers L.B. Leonard JR and Richard L. Leonard, and his son Kenneth N. Leonard.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Rebecca L. Leonard; daughter Amy Leonard Smith of Lexington, Kentucky; four grandchildren, AT2 Michael A. Smith serving the Navy, P.F.C. Karl A.L. Smith serving the National Guard, Rebecca E. Smith of Lexington, Kentucky, and Carolina J. Leonard of Sperryville, Virginia; his sister Betty Ann Knudsen of Raleigh, North Carolina; and a large, loving, extended family.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 26th, at 2:30 in the afternoon at First Baptist Church with Dr. Marvin Cameron and Dr. Ron Davis officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Color Guard at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 27, 2009, at Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tennessee. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Friendship Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church.
