Jim Watkins

James B. Watkins, 86, of Kingsport, died at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 27, 2009, at Hospice House in Bristol, TN, with his children at his side. Born on November 12, 1922, to J.H. Watkins and Hattie Baker Watkins, he was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School where he participated in all sports. Jim was one of a handful of students who immediately joined the military after Pearl Harbor. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served until the end of World War II.

Jim attended Emory and Henry College before becoming a mechanical contractor and serving on the State of Tennessee Licensing Board for Plumbers for a number of years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He was also a member of the Society of American Mechanical Engineers, the Rotary Club of Kingsport, Veterans of Foreign Wars, a Charter Member of the '40 Club, a Charter Member of the Cherokee Rod and Gun Club, a member of the Board of Directors of the Netherland Inn Association, and an active worker with Habitat for Humanity.

"Daddy Jim", as he was fondly known to his children, was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt, fish, and play golf. He loved his building projects and was a perfectionist at everything he created. Jim was a loving and caring father, husband, grandfather, and a strong, yet gentle, man.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Jacquelyn "Jackie" Hill Watkins; a daughter, Gail Louise Watkins; a brother, Wilbur Watkins and a sister, Helen Cox.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Penn Fausold of Kingsport; daughter, Anne Watkins Tolley of Fall Branch; son, James J. Watkins and wife Karen of Kingsport; step-children, Alyson Fausold of San Francisco, CA, and William Penn Fausold of Abingdon, VA; grandchildren, Will Tolley and Ian Tolley of Fall Branch, and Sarah Beth Rains of Kingsport; great-grandson and fishing buddy, Ethan David Jessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

An inurnment service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 30th, at Oak Hill Memorial Park. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. the same day at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle and The Rev. C. Stevens Catheart officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the Memorial Service.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Wellmont Hospice and the Wellmont Hospice House for providing exceptional care and service, and to The Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle.
