Jimmy Ray Sturgill, 76, 217 Shipley Road, Church Hill, TN, went to be with the Lord at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born in Dorchester, Virginia, and was a 1952 graduate of Wise High School, Wise, VA. Jimmy retired from the U. S. Navy after 20 years of service attaining the rank of 1st Class Petty Officer. He also retired after 20 more years of service from the Department of Navy Supervision of Ship Building. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and a member of North Kingsport Church of God.
Surviving are his wife, Anna Ruth Sturgill of the home; a daughter, Elaine Sturgill of Church Hill; his mother, Margie Sturgill of Norton, VA; one brother, Gerald "Jerry" Sturgill of Norton, VA; and one nephew, Eddie Sturgill.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
The body will be taken to North Kingsport Church of God on John B. Dennis Bypass at 1:00 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the church with Rev. LeBron Palmer officiating. Graveside services will follow at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton with military rites by local Veterans of Foreign Wars.
