Joan Alvis Barbour, 73, of Kingsport, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday evening, September 8, 2024. Joan was born on May 22, 1951, in Kingsport, Tennessee. She resided here her entire life. Joan was of the Christian faith and enjoyed lifelong relationships with her friends at Rock Springs Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Sullivan High School. Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She retired from Belk in the Clinique department. She adored her job, especially all the customers that she became friends with throughout her 28-year career. She was often recognized as the “Clinique lady” when out in town. Joan was a member of the Red Hat Society (Bodacious Babes of the Tri-Cities). She adored her Red Hat sisters, their fellowship and their trips.
Joan was fiercely loyal to her family and friends. She loved traveling, shopping, hosting gatherings, jewelry and beautiful clothes.
She was preceded in death by her son, Brian James Barbour; her parents, John and Lucille Alvis of Kingsport; brother, David Alvis of Kingsport; and both her maternal and paternal grandparents.
Joan is survived by her husband of 54 years, Amos Barbour; her daughters, Amy Chastain and Ginger Canty Story (Tim); and sister-in-law, Mary Masters. The survivors she cherished the most were her precious grandchildren, Whitney (Adam), Ruby, Olive, Maddie and Parker. One of her goals in life was to spoil her grandkids and she was successful in meeting this goal. She is also survived by her best friend and travel companion, Brenda Price.
The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating.
The graveside service will be held on Friday at 11:00 am at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Marshall Salyers, Jeff Helton, Rusty Barbour, Tim Story, Adam Harpster and Pete Barbour.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org, or to the Shriners Hospital for Children, www.donate.lovetotherescue.org.
