Joan Alvis Barbour, 73, of Kingsport, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday evening, September 8, 2024. Joan was born on May 22, 1951, in Kingsport, Tennessee. She resided here her entire life. Joan was of the Christian faith and enjoyed lifelong relationships with her friends at Rock Springs Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Sullivan High School. Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She retired from Belk in the Clinique department. She adored her job, especially all the customers that she became friends with throughout her 28-year career. She was often recognized as the “Clinique lady” when out in town. Joan was a member of the Red Hat Society (Bodacious Babes of the Tri-Cities). She adored her Red Hat sisters, their fellowship and their trips.

Joan was fiercely loyal to her family and friends. She loved traveling, shopping, hosting gatherings, jewelry and beautiful clothes.

She was preceded in death by her son, Brian James Barbour; her parents, John and Lucille Alvis of Kingsport; brother, David Alvis of Kingsport; and both her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Joan is survived by her husband of 54 years, Amos Barbour; her daughters, Amy Chastain and Ginger Canty Story (Tim); and sister-in-law, Mary Masters. The survivors she cherished the most were her precious grandchildren, Whitney (Adam), Ruby, Olive, Maddie and Parker. One of her goals in life was to spoil her grandkids and she was successful in meeting this goal. She is also survived by her best friend and travel companion, Brenda Price.
