Joanne Allen Mackintosh

Joanne Allen Mackintosh, 92, Kingsport died on Sunday, March 17, 2019.  Joanne graduated as salutatorian from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1944. She entered Northwestern U. in Evanston, IL, but spent her junior and senior years in NU’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, earning a B.S. degree in 1948.  A member of Zeta Tau Alpha, she served as president of Alpha Phi Chapter.

In 1948-49, while employed as a copywriter for WKPT radio, she joined the newly-organized Kingsport chapter of the American Association of University Women and was elected its charter president.  The following year she decided to do post-graduate work at Columbia University Teachers College to pursue a Master of Arts degree in the Teaching of English in Junior Colleges and Community Colleges. She was especially pleased that her diploma was signed by Dwight D. Eisenhower, then president of Columbia University.

Joanne’s first full-time teaching position was as instructor of English at Centenary Junior College in Hackettstown, NJ.  Later, she joined the English Department at Augusta College as assistant professor, and from 1963-65 she was acting head of the English Department at St. Mary’s College of MD, St. Mary’s City.

By then Joanne had been introduced to duplicate bridge, which led to a new career as a bridge teacher.  Licensed by the American Contract Bridge Teachers Association, she also became a certified director for duplicate games. Having achieved her goal of Life Master in 1969, she earned a lifetime total of over 2,000 pointed, or Silver Life Master Status.

Her travels and cruises took her to destinations far and wide. And her love of books and reading gave her much pleasure.  In the early 1950’s she had been the children’s librarian at the Kingsport Public Library.   She was a member of the Kingsport Book Club, the Wednesday Discussion Group and the Historical Society of Kingsport.  Joanne belonged to the First Presbyterian Church when it was a former schoolhouse.

She was preceded in death by her parents, W. Arthur Allen and Ruby Coggins Allen; former husband, Donald Mackintosh; and niece, Kimberley Salyer.

Joanne is survived by her sister, Carolyn A. Salyer; niece, Diane (Tom) Beasley; and nephew, Allen Salyer.
