Joanne Elizabeth Whitt, 79, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord late Monday afternoon, September 9, 2013, at her home. Joanne was born in Selma, NC, and had resided in Kingsport since 1960.
Graduate of ETSU, Joanne then worked for Meade Paper and the office of the Dean at the University of Virginia. She then worked for her husband's medical practice for many years.
Joanne was an avid volunteer for the American Red Cross, spending many hours assisting in the school clinic. She was also very involved in the drug task force where she combated drugs in the Kingsport City Schools. Joanne was a member of First Presbyterian Church and had served as pianist for Cedarview Presbyterian for over twenty years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. H. Jackson Whitt; daughter, Carol Whitt; sister, Laura Jane Weddell; parents, D.F. and Josephine Waddell.
Joanne is survived by daughter, Kathy Visneski and husband, Mike, Kingsport, TN; son, Tom Whitt and wife, Pam, Yuma, VA; seven grandchildren, Sarah, Benjamin, Kristen, Tiffany, Thomas, Mary, and Kaitlyn; sister, Nell Schnader and husband, Jack, Durham, NC; brother D.F. (John) Waddell, Jr., Newport News, VA; many treasured nieces and nephews. Joanne was a second mother to countless others.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2013, at Cedarview Presbyterian Church. The service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor David Sims and Dennis Spurgeon officiating.
