Joe Thomas Neeley, passed away peacefully at his home on September 6, 2018, with his loving wife, Gaye, by his side. He had fought a courageous battle with cancer for several years. Joe grew up in Duffield and Clinchport, VA, where he made many lifelong friends. He was a kind and gentle person who always had a smile for everyone. Joe was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church where he was a member of the Joel Sunday School Class. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Joe retired from Food City in Kingsport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ike and Lillie Belle Neeley; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bessie and Bill Tucker and his godson, Jamison.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 48 years, Gaye; sisters, Thelma Mann and husband Bill, and Jacqueline Hurley and husband Dwayne; sister-in-law, Patsy Arnold; and several nieces and nephews; his goddaughter, Ashley and his four great godchildren; his little dog, Sophie; and wonderful friends and neighbors.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Rebecca, Trudy and Erica of Amedisys Hospice for their love and support, and Tina from Home Instead. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, September 10, 2018, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport and at other hours at the residence. A Veterans Tribute Service will be provided by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #979 at 5:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with Dr. Donnie C. Brannen and Rev. Richard Harris officiating.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at East Lawn Memorial Park with Military Honors accorded by The American Legion, Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post # 265. Those attending committal services are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 12 noon Tuesday and then proceed to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Danny Livesay, Dwayne Hurley, Bill Mann, Jason Mann, Hagan Bowen, and James Karnes. Honorary pallbearers will be C.B. Shanks, Bob Berg, Randy Smith, Jim Wood, Alvin Shoemaker, Tony Queen, and Joel Calloway.
