John William Baxter, 92, of Fall Branch went home to be with the Lord Sunday, September 2, 2007, at Indian Path Medical Center after an extended illness.
He was born and raised in Fall Branch, Tennessee, and graduated from Fall Branch High School in 1936. He was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps, B Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Division serving in the South Pacific Solomon Island Campaign for 21 months.
John was a life member of American Legion Post #3 in Kingsport, a member of Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of VFW, and a member of Disabled American Veterans Kingsport Chapter #38. Other memberships include a 50-year member of Johnson Lodge #274 in Fall Branch, Lynn Bachman Chapter #195 of Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons in Kingsport, Kingsport Council #117 of Grand Council Cryptic Masons, and Kingsport Commandery #33 of The Right Eminent Grand Commandery of Tennessee.
Preceding him in death were his parents, William M. and Ada Baxter; and one sister, Eula Baxter Carson.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Margaret H. Baxter, Fall Branch; one son, Van David Baxter and wife, Diane, Knoxville; one daughter J. Ellen Fisher, Fall Branch; four grandchildren, Sarah Fisher Coulthard and husband Brad, William E. Fisher, Adam Ross Baxter, and David Alden Baxter; one brother, Glen Marvin Baxter and wife, Edith, Fall Branch; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends, Jackie Burke and David Moody.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Fall Branch. Funeral services will follow at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Millard Johnson officiating. Masonic rites will be conducted by Johnson Lodge #274.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Fall Branch United Methodist Church Cemetery with military rites by Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of the VFW.
Pallbearers will be Will Fisher, Adam Baxter, David Baxter, Doug Carson, Bo Baxter, George Moody, Brad Coulthard, and John Moyle. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the church.
