John Charles Mayo

John Charles Mayo, 70, of Kingsport passed away Friday, November 4, 2016, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center due to GI Stromal Tumor complications. He fought a strong, courageous battle with cancer for over four years.

John was born August 14, 1946, in Rogersville TN to the late John Russell and Grace Leeper Mayo. He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1964 and attended ETSU. He joined the U.S Army in 1966. John served his country in Vietnam in the 1st Battalion, 13th Brigade of the 1st Armor Division and was a recipient of the Bronze Service Star. On September 24, 1966, John married Sandra Marsh Mayo who preceded him in death on December 5, 2015. He worked at Kingsport Armature & Electric and the City of Kingsport as a building inspector retiring in 1991. John had a lifelong interest in local history centered on Indian relics, the Civil War, and genealogy.

He was preceded in death by his loving and faithful wife, Sandra, his parents and brother, James Edward (Jimmy) Mayo. Those left to cherish his memory are sisters-and brothers-in-law Karen & Jerry Salyer, Brenda & Jerry Jessee, Judy Kiser and John (Randy) Marsh, brother Robert H. Mayo, nephews Robert R. Mayo, Greg Jessee, Halley Harper, & John Kiser and nieces Sandy Williams, Patricia Flores, Aimee Morelock, & Megan Templeton.

Family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00pm Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Hamlett-Dobson Downtown with a Veterans Appreciation Service at 4:00pm conducted by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter # 979.

A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 6:00pm Sunday in the chapel with Pastor Karl Berndt officiating. Special Music will be provided by Holly Berndt.

Burial will follow graveside services at 2:00pm Monday, November 7, 2016 in Ross Camp Ground Cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #979, escorted by Robert R. Mayo. Honorary pallbearers will Richard Houser, Fred Sturgill and John Ward. Military Honors will be accorded by The American Legion, Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265. Those attending services are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 1:00pm Monday and then proceed to the cemetery.
