John Ray Fischer, 66, went to be with the Lord Monday, February 23, 2009 at his home in Richmond, VA.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961-1965 and loved the fast life whether in a car or on the dance floor. He had a rough exterior but had a great big heart.
John resided in Gate City, VA from 1974-1981 where he worked in the furniture industry and at Gate City Funeral Home. He was an avid quarter horse rider and enjoyed going to horse shows. John loved fishing, playing cards, watching college and pro football, NASCAR Racing especially Little E and traveling thru Atlantic City and Las Vegas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Fischer; maternal grandparents, Rodney and Bessie Rainier; paternal grandparents, August and Lillian Fischer; brother-in-law, Nukey West.
Surviving are his daughter, Heather Ray Richards and husband John, Myrtle Beach, SC; sons, John Ray Fischer, JR and fiancé Brenda, Gate City, VA, Lindsay Fischer and wife Jessica, Hiltons, VA; grandchildren, Hope Ariana Ketron, Sam Warren Fischer, Hadley Jo Richards and Hadyn Elizabeth Richards; sisters, Linda West, Chester, VA, Elizabeth Browning, Richmond, VA; brother, Michael Fischer and wife Susan, Glen Allen, VA; Uncle, Bobby Fischer and wife Kathy, Richmond, VA; Aunt, Adele Myers, Brooklawn, NJ; step daughters, Karyn Addington and husband Joey, Myrtle Beach, SC, Stephanie Robinson and husband John, Richmond, VA; 8 step grandchildren; 1 niece and 5 nephews; cousin, Nancy Papp, Brooklawn, NJ; special friends, Paul Blackwell, Bubba Price and Jorita Falin Blockston.
The family will receive friends from 10 am to 11 am Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Darthula Baptist Church, Lunsford Mill Rd, Hiltons, VA. Memorial services will be conducted at 11 am Saturday in the church sanctuary with his dear friend Rev. Layton Bentley officiating.
Military graveside services will follow in the church cemetery with the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Gate City Post #265 and the Virginia Army National Guard providing the honors.
