John Henry McConnell passed away Friday evening, April 4th, 2008. He suffered a heart attack the evening of Tuesday, April 1st. He was 85 years old and lived in Kingsport, TN with his wife.
John McConnell was born in Midway, Virginia on December 30th, 1922. His parents were George Washington McConnell and Etta Addington McConnell. He was the last surviving sibling of eight children. He graduated from Midway High School in Scott County, Virginia in 1941. John enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as an air radioman from 1943-1946. He went to Naval Air Technical School in Jacksonville, Florida where he graduated and eventually became an instructor.
After the Navy, John was employed by First National Bank of Kingsport in 1947. This bank went through several name changes including, the First National Bank of Sullivan County, First Eastern National Bank, and First American National Bank. While employed at the bank, he went to many training schools including the LSU Graduate School of Banking of the South from 1957¬-1959 and the University of Tennessee Executive Development Program from 1979-1980. He served in many different positions at the bank and was employed with them for over forty years. His last position before he retired in 1989 was as Senior Vice president of the Correspondent Banking Department responsible for the development of relations with other financial institutions in East Tennessee, Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, and West Virginia.
John was a member of many professional and civic organizations including the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, the Bank Administration Institute, Meadowview Golf Club, the Optimist Club, the American Legion, and the Kingsport Planning Commission.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth McConnell; his son Michael McConnell; and his granddaughter, Rhiannon McConnell. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Visitation for Mr. McConnell will be held at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral home in Kingsport, TN from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday April 7th.
Funeral Services will be held at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral home at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8th with Pastor Jeff Wallen officiating.
Graveside services will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #3/265.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
