John Dean Morelock, 71, of Kingsport went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
He grew up in Sullivan Gardens and graduated from Sullivan High School. There he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. He was a lifelong active member of the Sullivan Baptist Church.
Dean loved life and never met a stranger. His joy was in his family and helping people. He was an avid golfer and won many tournaments and awards. He was a member of The Crossings Golf Club and MeadowView Golf Club. He was a member of several organizations including the Kingsport Optimist Club, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and he was also an official for the TSSAA Basketball Association. Dean retired from Holston Defense Corporation and then worked for BAE Systems. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He leaves his family and friends a wonderful legacy of love, caring and giving.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur E. and Nettie Jones Morelock; brother, Reeva Morelock and sister, Thelma Osborne.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jackie Bishop Morelock; son, Shannon Morelock and wife Kimberly; grandson, Gabriel Morelock; granddaughter, Megan Morelock; step-granddaughter, Megan Andrews; nephews, Charlie Morelock and wife, Sally, Alan Morelock, Denny Morelock and wife, Judy; niece, Judy Morelock, sister-in-law, Gertrude Morelock and constant companion, Smokey .
The family will receive friends from 4-7 pm on Friday, January 14, 2011 at Sullivan Baptist Church. The service will begin at 7 pm with Pastor Jeff Strong officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 pm Saturday at East Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are Charlie Morelock, Gary Light, Kenneth Conkin, Rodney Fields, Gordon Zollman, Joe Mitchell, Andrew Foerster, Brian Ritz, and Derek Olterman. Honorary pallbearers are Tom Olterman, Dr. Mack Patton, Earl Wright, Jerry Richardson, Gary Dykes, Dr. Robert Strang, Sr., James W. Bud Clark, The Crossings Golf Club buddies and Greater Kingsport Amateur Golf Association competitors.
In lieu of lowers, the family requests memorial contributions are made to the Sullivan Baptist building fund, Sullivan Baptist Church, 4152 Maplewood Street, Kingsport, TN 37660.
