John Timothy Smith, 60, of Kingsport, passed away Monday, March 12, 2007, at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of the Kingsport area and retired as a Lieutenant Detective of the Sullivan County Sheriff Department. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Burgess Mill Lodge, and a member of Chapter 979 of Vietnam Veterans of America. Tim was also a disaster volunteer for the American Red Cross and served in the United States Navy from 1968 to 1973 including a tour of duty in South Vietnam. He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School and East Tennessee State University with degrees in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice. One of his many passions included traveling. He was a devoted family man.
Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Geraldine Smith.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Smith of Piney Flats; a son, Michael Smith of McKenzie, TN; and a daughter, Michelle Smith, Piney Flats, TN.
The family will receive friends Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Margaret K. Zeller officiating.
