John Morgan Wininger went to be with his Lord on Sunday, July 14, 2013, after an extended illness.
He was born in 1937, the only child of Jay and Elva Wininger, and grew up in the Central Heights Community. He graduated from Blountville High School in 1955 and married the love of his life, Mary Ann Akard, in 1958.
John completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Tennessee in 1959, graduating with honors. He began his career at the shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. He then joined Eastman Kodak in 1962, where he worked for 35 years. He acquired his land surveyor's license in 1969 and covered many acres in Sullivan County, while also teaching others the trade.
He was a member of Blountville United Methodist Church, a member of the Wesleyan Sunday School class, the United Methodist Men, and served his church on many committees through the years.
John also enjoyed many years of ballroom dancing with Mary Ann, as well as entertaining friends and family at their summer home on Boone Lake. John was a devoted son, husband, and father, spending many years caring for his elderly family members in their time of need. He devoted his life to his wife and family, always working tirelessly to provide for his family, stressing the importance of a Christian home and the value of a college education.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of over 50 years, Mary Ann Wininger.
John is survived by his children: Carla Countiss and her husband, Robert, Dr. David Wininger and his wife, Sandy, Mark Wininger and his wife, Tammy, Dr. Andrea Wininger Hood and her husband, Dr. Jason Hood; ten grandchildren, Amanda Countiss, Jacob Countiss, Morgan Wininger, Matthew Wininger, Brandon Wininger, Jarred Wininger, Madelyn Wininger, Aaron Wininger, Wesley Hood, and Samuel Hood.
The family will receive friends at Blountville United Methodist Church from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2013. The funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. with Rev. Charles Ensminger and Rev. Robert Countiss officiating. The burial service will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brandon Wininger, Jarred Wininger, Jacob Countiss, Alan Akard, Chris Akard, Todd Akard, Travis Akard, and Pete Akard. Honorary Pallbearers are Bill Akard, Ron Akard, Joe Mike Akard, Al Spaller, Charles Ramsey, David Fugate, Dee Reece Lawson, Bob Odell and Charles Hardin.
