John C. Wooten, Former District Attorney General of Sullivan, Hawkins, Hamblin, and Greene Counties, died Sunday, June 24, 2007, after a brief illness.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict having served in the Combat Engineers and in the Air Force in Korea. Mr. Wooten was licensed to practice law in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Texas, and to appear before the U.S. 6th Circuit of Appeals in Ohio. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as State Department Commander and President of the 14-State Southern Conference.
In 1964 he accepted a position of Trial Attorney with the National Labor Relations Board in Tampa, Florida, and was subsequently promoted to Officer-In-Charge of the Resident Office in Jacksonsville, Florida, where he retired in 1982.
Preceding him in death were his parents and two sisters, Imogene Queen and Loretta Light.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 58 years, Winifred Bralley; one sister Shirley Wooten Dorton and husband, Howard of Limestone, TN; three nieces; and one nephew.
Calling hours are from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
Services will be conduced at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Lonnie ?Buddy? Wooten, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park with military rites conducted by Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of the VFW.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Political Interest Committee of Kingsport comprised of Judge John Mclellan, Judge Duane Snodgrass, Judge Tommy Hulse, Rep. Nathan Vaughn, Sheriff Wayne Anderson, Dr. Patrick Bassinger, Dr. B. C. Pendleton, Ken Bowles, Hagan Bright, Harold ?Serge? Childress, Norman Falin, A. L. Hubbard, Wayne Long, Elmer Palmer, Calvin Smith, Richard Venable, Chief Jim Keesling, Gene Mills, Alderman Hoyt Denton, and all other members of PICK.
Memorials may be made to the Honor Guard Unit of VFW Post #3382 to help them provide future burial services to all veterans.
