Johnie Paul Wells, 78, of Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord at 1:15 p.m. Monday, October, 4, 2010, following an extended illness.

Johnie was born in Dickson, TN, and had resided in Kingsport since 1960. He was an employee of the Department of Conservation for the State of Tennessee for 63 years serving as superintendent of Warrior's Path State Park for 32 of those years. He fulfilled his career as Area Manager and Special Projects Coordinator. Johnie was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. He was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church and a member of the Democratic Party of East Tennessee, of which he served two terms as chairman.

Johnie was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Felton and Della Mae Wells; his first wife and mother of his children, Evelyn Christine Wells; a daughter, Pamela Sue Banks; a brother, Finley Wells; and a sister, Elizabeth Proctor.

Surviving are his wife, Mary H. Wells of Kingsport; daughters, Johnnie "Paulie" Gilley and husband Esta of Manning, SC, Renee Hammitt and husband David of Kingsport, and Rita Osborne and husband Michael of Bluff City; stepsons, Gary Spears and wife Sandy of Kingsport and Tony Lee Spears of Johnson City; grandchildren, Amber Williams, Adriane Gaff, Lindsay Hammitt, David Gilley, Kimberly Ruff, Kristina Ashcraft, Christopher Spears, Audrey Taylor, Rhyne Hammitt, Joshua Osborne, Alisha Coates, and Jared Osborne; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 12 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Friends may also call at the home of his daughter, Rita Osborne, 112 Brittany Circle, Bluff City, TN

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Esta Gilley officiating.

Burial will follow at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Gary Spears, Ricky Honeycutt, David Hammitt, Michael Osborne, David Gilley, and Chris Ashcraft.

Memorials may be given to the Shriners Children's Hospital, 950 W. Farris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
