Johnny Larry Griffin, 58, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.
Johnny was a graduate of Rye Cove High School and employed by Air Gas Mid-America. He was an avid hunter and coached in the Lynn View Pee Wee Football League and the Sullivan County Football League. Johnny was a loving husband, daddy, "Poppy", brother, and friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stuart and Edith Griffin; two sisters, LaDonna Griffin and Wilma Jean Jones; and father-in-law, Carl "Mousey" Phillips.
Surviving are his wife, Diane Griffin, Kingsport; two daughters, April Steele and husband Denny of Church Hill and Sarah Moody of Kingsport; one son, Brad Manis of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Jordan Patterson, Peyton Steele, Rylee Steele, and Griffin Moody; three brothers, Bill Griffin of Kingsport, Herman Griffin and wife Mary of Church Hill, and Jerry Griffin and wife Myrtle of Kingsport; four sisters, Shirley McDavid of Gate City, VA, Brenda Berry and husband Gale of Gate City, VA, Janice Qualls and husband Silas of Duffield, VA, and Cathy Gibson and husband Jim of Kingsport; mother-in-law, Mary Ellen Phillips, Kingsport; two special nieces, Debbie Weems and Stacey Forrester; several other nieces and nephews; and special friend, Raymond Summey.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Services will be held at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Brother Ed McLain officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Clendenen Family Cemetery in Duffield, VA. Friends will serve as pallbearers.
