Joseph Lee Johnson, 35 of Mt. Carmel, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, May 21, 2011, at his home after complications from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident in 2004.
Born in Kingsport, where he resided most of his life, Lee was a 1994 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School. He was a 1998 graduate of Furman University in Greeneville, SC, where he was on a football scholarship. He received a B. S. in Computer Science from Furman University. He was a building contractor/REALTOR in the Kingsport area. Lee was a member of First Christian Church and Sigma Chi Fraternity. He loved DBHS and UT football, Duke University men's basketball and golf. Lee was a loving husband, father, and son. He was a gentle-hearted Christian man that never knew a stranger. His wife, daughters, and parents were his world.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Joseph Clayton Johnson, Sr. and Anne B. Johnson.
Survivors include his wife, Malinda Wood Johnson of the home; five daughters, Siera, Savannah, Ellie, Kate, and Emmalee; his parents, Joe C. Johnson, Jr. and Patty B. Johnson, Kingsport; maternal grandparents, Kermit and Marie Bolton, Mt. Carmel; mother-in-law Marie M. Wood, Kingsport; father-in-law, John W. Wood and wife Linda, Gray; sister-in-law, Dee Dee Fitts and husband Chris, Kernersville, NC; brother-in-law, Mark Wood, Kingsport; special friends, Cindy Hardee and Tammy Smith, Kingsport; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 pm Tuesday at First Christian Church in Kingsport; funeral services will follow at 7 pm at the church with Phillip Sams, Minister; Dr. Ed Clevinger; and Matt Hickman, Minister, officiating. Music will be provided by Law and Grace.
Graveside services will be Wednesday at 1 pm in Oak Hill Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Jonathan Reed, Allen Greene, Ryan Wagner, Graham Clark, Kevin Marsh, Ron Culhane, Matt Hickman, Chris Fitts, Jeremiah Tate, Joey Christian. Honorary pallbearers will be Elders of First Christian Church, Mark Wood, Jack Clevinger, Darrell Watson, and Frank Marsh.
