Judge Calton JR

Judge Terry Calton, Jr., born in Imboden, VA, to the late Judge T. Calton, Sr., and Etta Southard Calton, died on Wednesday, December 10, 2014.

Judge was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church where he had served on the Administrative Board, a member of the board of Holston Valley Medical Center, and over the years served as a volunteer for several community agencies. After retiring in 1987 he was a member of the adjunct faculty of Mountain empire Community College.

He was a graduate of Berea College, Berea, KY and completed his post-graduate studies at Columbia University in New York City. He was among the first graduates of Columbia University to receive a degree in Administrative Medicine. During the course of his 32 years in health care, Judge served as administrator of the Appalachian Regional Hospital, Wise, VA, Director of the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, KY, and President of Methodist Hospital of Memphis, Memphis, TN.

Judge was a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and served on the boards of numerous health related and community organizations. He served as President-Elect of the Kentucky Hospital Association, President of the Hospital Alliance of Tennessee, an alliance of Tennessee non-profit hospitals, and Chairman of the Board of the Tennessee Hospital Association. Judge was awarded the associations Distinguished Service award in 1987. At the time of his retirement from health care management, he was recognized with a joint resolution of the Tennessee Legislature for his contributions to health care in Tennessee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Ruth Mabe, and Mildred L. Hurley, and his brother, John A. Calton.

Judge is survived by his two sons, Michael S. Calton and wife, Tammi, and Anthony L. Calton of Lexington, KY; his two sisters, Blanche E. Newman and husband, Carl of Gate City, VA, and Virginia L. Barton and husband, Paul of Imboden, VA; five grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

At his request there will be no formal visitation or funeral service. Friends and family are invited to attend graveside services at the Big Stone Gap Glencoe Cemetery Mausoleum at noon on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 with Reverend Tony Nunnley of the Imboden Methodist Church officiating.

Judge spent many pleasant hours planting and growing flowers around his homes and would be pleased by floral arrangements.
