Larry Roy Coates, 64, of Kingsport, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 with his children by his side. He was born November 18, 1947 in Kingsport, TN. An avid sports fan and athlete, Larry actively participated in collecting baseball cards and record albums. His ability to retain and quote baseball statistics was phenomenal. He holds the record for most points scored in a Kingsport City League basketball game with 64 points, while sitting out the 3rd quarter. "Pepaw" loved to watch his grandchildren play sports.
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Coates and special friend and mother of his children, Brenda Phillips.
Larry is survived by his children; Larry A. Coates and wife, Donna, Kimberly Coates Chase and husband, Roger, Kathy Coates Galloway and husband, Joel, Gregory A. Coates and wife, Alisha; grandchildren, Steffen Chase, Shandi Coates, Kevin Coates, Hannah Coates, Connor Chase, Gannon Chase, Cayden Coates and Addisyn Coates; great-grandchildren, Landon Dingus, Kaylan Coates and another great-grandson due to arrive this month. Mother, Mary Coates. Brothers; Gary Coates, Jerry Coates and sister, Terri Oaks. Several nieces and nephews. Larry had many close friends and loved ones, including Tera Phillips. Larry was a special friend of Bill W. since 2001.
The family would like to thank Dr. Reddy from Vanderbilt Hospital for the exceptional care given to their father.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 13, 2012 from 6-8:00 pm at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at noon at the Hamlett-Dobson Chapel with Rev. Philip Lovelace officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted on Saturday following the service at Providence Presbyterian Cemetery in Limestone, TN.
Pallbearers will be Steffen Chase, Kevin Coates, Connor Chase, Gannon Chase, Roger Chase, Joel Galloway, Gary D. Coates and Logan Coates. Honorary pallbearers Gary Coates, Landon Dingus and Cayden Coates.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made the American Cancer Society.
