Margaret Cox Umberger, 100, Kingsport, died Sunday June 8, 2008.
She attended Virginia Intermont College, East Tennessee State University, Columbia University, and King College. Mrs. Umberger was a much loved teacher in the Sullivan County School System for 30 years.
Mrs. Umberger was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Ridgefields Country Club.
She was an outstanding volunteer in Kingsport, devoting her time to the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and the Netherland Inn. She was a volunteer naturalist at Bays Mountain Park and a volunteer at Holston Valley Hospital Blood Bank for 45 years where she was best known as "The Cookie Lady".
Preceding her in death were her husband of 35 years, Kenneth Yonce Umberger; parents, William Henry Cox and Pearl Sanders Cox; sisters, Louise Cox Cartwright and Serphina Cox Blevins; and brothers, William H. Cox and Richard H. Cox.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Umberger Gorham of Nashville, TN; six grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; brother, John I. Cox, Blountville; and thirteen nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the church with Pastor Steve Counts officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be her nephews, Ed Blevins, Richard Cartwright, James Cox, Major Henry Cox, Ret., John I. Cox III, Richard Cox, and Bill Cartwright.
