Laurena Hoover, 88, of Kingsport, passed away Monday, December 1, 2014 at Baysmont following an extended illness.
She was born on December 8, 1925 in Enterprise, Oklahoma. Her parents moved to Kingsport in 1936. Laurena graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1942 and from Carson-Newman College in 1946.
Laurena was an English teacher for twenty-five years at area high schools including Holston Institute, Sullivan Central, and Sullivan South. Upon retirement she was active with the Sullivan County Teachers Association, of which she was a former president.
She was an active member of First Baptist Church and displayed her faith and concern for others in many ways. She taught a ladies Sunday School class for many years. Laurena was a sponsor of the Prayer Club at the schools in which she taught. She worked as a volunteer at Contact Concern. She was also a volunteer at Dobyns-Bennett helping students who were deficient in reading skills.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 67 years, Herbert Hoover and her parents, Elmer and Laura Billington.
Laurena is survived by her four sons: Mark of Lake Orion, Michigan; Roger and his wife Susan of Kingsport; David and his wife Andi of Kingsport; and Kent and his wife Kate of Arlington, Virginia; a brother, John Billington of Memphis; three grandsons: Michael and his wife Rebecca; Rob and his wife Autumn, and Roger William, all from Kingsport; granddaughter, Mariah of Lake Orion, Michigan; and three great-grandchildren: Andrew, Abbey and Reese Hoover of Kingsport.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 4, 2014 from 5:30-7:00 pm at the First Baptist Church sanctuary with services following at 7:00 pm with Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating. A family graveside service will be held Thursday afternoon at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
The family would like to especially thank the staff of Steadman Hill Assisted Living and the staff at Baysmont for the loving care they have provided over the past six years.
