Lawrence Wiley Thayer

Lawrence W. Thayer, 85, of Kingsport, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2008 after a brief illness.

Born in Abingdon, VA, on November 29, 1922, Lawrence moved to Kingsport at an early age and was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High where he excelled in basketball and tennis. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving during World War II on the USS Callan. He retired from Eastman Chemical Company as a engineering supervisor in 1986 after 43 years of service. After retiring, Lawrence and his wife, Reba, took up golf which they thoroughly enjoyed until health problems required them to stop playing a few years ago.
Lawrence was a member of the Elks Club and Lions Club, holding numerous leadership positions in each. He was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church for over 50 years, serving in many roles in support of the church's progress and growth. While living at Crown Colony for over 30 years, he took a very active and passionate role in the maintenance and upkeep of the neighborhood. He was a loyal fan of the Atlanta Braves and the University of Tennessee Women's Basketball Team, seldom missing a game when televised.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cora and George Thayer, and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucille and Roy Bridwell, Edith and Harry Garnand and Georgia and Dick Collins.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Reba Sproles Thayer of the home; one son, Timothy L. Thayer of Kingsport, two daughters, Marcy Thayer and Dawn Salyer, both of Chattanooga, one granddaughter, Sara Salyer, two grandsons, Evan and Elliott Anderson, one great granddaughter, Taylor Anderson, a sister-in-law, Sue Brown, and several nieces and nephews.


A service of celebration is scheduled Saturday, May 24, at 2 PM in the chapel of First Broad Street United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Lawrence requested to be cremated with inurnment at the church at a future date.
