Lena "Margene" Sharp, 89, Kingsport, Tennessee passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at Life Care Center of Gray following a long and courageous battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. She was of the Methodist faith.
She was a native of Knox County, Missouri, leaving Missouri in January 1944 during World War II to marry Carl Sharp who was temporarily stationed in Jacksonville, FL with the U.S. Army before deploying to Europe. Margene lived in several states and in Germany during her life as a military wife and homemaker but had resided in Kingsport since 1991.
Margene was born November 17, 1924 in Knox County, Missouri and was one of four children of Benjamin H. and Gertrude Riegel Tonnies. She enjoyed gardening and taking care of her family. She was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who always put her families' needs before her own. No one ever who met her could forget her caring and loving smile as she enriched the lives of her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Margene was preceded in death in 1977 by her husband Sgt. Major Carl L. Sharp, US Army (ret.); sister, Jessie Tonnies Gilbert; granddaughter Allison Hickman; and nephews Bennie Peterson and Bill Gilbert.
She is survived by her daughter Judy Hickman and son-in-law Russ Hickman of Kingsport; three grandchildren, Amanda Tipton and husband Michael of Kingsport; Ryan Hickman of Atlanta, Georgia; Ashley Pickard and husband Jonathan and great-grandson Jason Pickard all of Atlanta, Georgia; sister Wanda Tonnies Peterson of Rutledge, Missouri; brother Verlin Tonnies and wife Mary Frances of Knox City, Missouri as well as three nieces, Brenda Gooch, Becky McCarty, and Deborah Huebotter all of Missouri ; one nephew, Bobby Gilbert of Kentucky and several great nieces and great nephews.
Graveside services will be held at Colony Cemetery, Colony, Missouri at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11. Rev. Jim Brown of Rutledge New Testament Church in Rutledge, Missouri will be officiating.
