Leon James Payne, "Bud", 86, of Kingsport, died Wednesday evening, April 27, 2011 at James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center.
Bud was born in Ithaca, NY. He was a diesel mechanic, retiring after 44 years of employment. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Air Corp. 390th bomb group as a bombardier in B17s, stationed in England. During his service, he flew 16 missions of which his most memorable was air drop of food and supplies over Holland. Bud was an avid hunter.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Sharon Payne; sisters Helen and Dorothy Payne; and brother Walter.
Survivors include his wife Mabel Payne, of Naples, NY; seven children: Virginia Jones and husband, Daniel of Dickson, TN, Barbara Smith and husband, Gary of Olympia, WA, Janet Hall and husband, Richard of Cumberland Furnace, TN, Debra Klein and husband, Mark of Arlington, WA, James Payne and wife, Willow of Camano Island, WA, John Payne and wife, Lisa of Kingsport, TN; and Paula Payne of Church Hill, TN; sixteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a sister Katherine Bates of Elyria, OH.
The family will receive friends from 5-6 pm Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The service will begin at 6 pm with Rev. Mickey Rainwater officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 pm Monday at Mountain Home National Cemetery.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
