Lois Ann Wadewitz passed away after an extended illness on December 10, 2017.
Lois is fondly remembered by those who knew her well as a jewel in her own way. She enjoyed knitting, needlework, stained glass, travel with her husband in their RV, and her beloved pet schnauzers. In later years she followed the UT Lady Volunteer Basketball team.
She was born Lois Ann Hammer along with her twin sister, Ruth Gladhill Hammer-Kwiatek in Jersey City, New Jersey on February 14, 1935 to William Hammer and Ruth Gladhill Hammer.
Lois graduated from Kearny High School in Kearny, NJ in 1953 and attended Tusculum College in Greenville, TN majoring in art and general studies. She met Peter Wadewitz at Tusculum and the two were married on January 28, 1956.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin sister, Ruth Gladhill Hammer-Kwiatek on September 9, 2001, and her son, Peter Wadewitz, Jr. on November 5, 2014.
Lois is survived by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Peter Wadewitz, of Kingsport; her sister, Dorothy Hanlon and husband, Dr. Robert Hanlon, of Kearny, New Jersey; her son, Martin Wadewitz and his wife, Helen Grace of Franklin North Carolina; daughter, Gretchen Gindlesperger and her husband, Kevin of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; daughter-in-law, Edithann Buckles-Wadewitz of Kingsport; five grandchildren, Seagh Mulligan of Brooklyn, New York, Siobhan Mulligan of Johnson City, Tennessee, Martin Wadewitz III of Baltimore, Maryland, Dillon Wadewitz and wife, Kendra of Franklin North Carolina, and Frank Buckles Wadewitz of Kingsport; and one great-granddaughter, Eliza Guffey of Franklin, NC.
The family also wishes to extended their sincerest appreciation for the dedicated and compassionate care that Lois and the family received from all of the staff of Wellmont Hospice.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 1 to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jack Edwards officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Frank Wadewitz, Dillon Wadewitz, Martin Wadewitz III, Martin Wadewitz II, Kevin Gindlesperger, and Seagn Mulligan.
