Lonnie Dale Fortner, 66, passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2011, at his home with his family by his side.
Born in Pennington Gap, VA, Lonnie enlisted in the U. S. Army at the age of 17. He completed two tours in Vietnam and received two Purple Hearts during this time. In 1982, after 20 years of service, Lonnie retired from the Army as a First Sergeant. Lonnie then worked in the coal mines in VA until he was hired by the US Postal Service in 1989. He worked as a city carrier until his second retirement in 2003.
Lonnie was a good man who lived a good life. He loved his family, animals, riding his Harley, and arguing about politics. He will be missed. He was preceded in death by his parents John Wesley and Ruby Evelyn Fortner of Robbins Chappel, VA.
Lonnie is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Terri Pendergrass Fortner of Kingsport; son, Jesse Fortner of Kingsport; daughter, Lisa Fortner, Mt. Carmel; twin brother, Ronnie Fortner and wife, Nyoka, Dandridge; brother, Johnny "Mick" Fortner and wife, Alice, Robbins Chapel VA; sister, Vicki Fortner and her life-partner, Mary Worley, Pennington Gap VA; aunt, Virginia "Gin" Robbins, Rogersville; uncle, Jack Thomas and wife, Irene, Robbins Chapel VA; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
At Lonnie's request, there will be no formal funeral service held. At a later date, the family will hold a celebration of life. At that time, Lonnie's ashes will be sprinkled in the woods that he loved.
