Louise Hughes Egger, 87, Kingsport, died March 29, 2007, at Indian Path Medical Center.
She was born February 25, 1920, in Fairfield, Iowa, to O. N. Newt and Hazel Grant Hughes. She attended Fairfield public schools and graduated from Parsons College in Fairfield, where she was a member of the College Choir and Elzevier Sorority.
In 1942, she came to Kingsport to work at Holston Ordnance Works. In November 1945, after having returned to Iowa, she married Kenneth Richard Egger, whom she had met in Kingsport. They made their home in Kingsport, living on Myrtle Street and Pineola Avenue before building a house on Essex Drive. They later moved to Preston Place.
Mrs. Egger was a homemaker and volunteer. She was a charter member of Home Gardeners Club of Kingsport during its entire 50-year existence and was honored with Life Membership in the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs in 1999. She was active at the Kingsport Girls Club and was named their volunteer of the year in 1978. She served on the city?s beautification commission.
She was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, where she attended the New Fidelis Sunday School class and sang with the Sounds of Joy. She and another member oversaw the Records/History of the church and prepared displays in the 1990s. She held numerous positions in the United Methodist Women.
Her interests included wildflower and bird identification, gardening, flower arranging, genealogy research, arts and crafts, hiking, and travel.
She was married to Kenneth Egger, who died in 2006, for 60 years. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Milford Eugene Knute Hughes.
Survivors include daughter, Carolyn Lipscomb, and husband, Joseph Lipscomb, of Atlanta, GA.; son, Philip Egger, stationed in Iraq with the U. S. Department of State, and wife, Patricia Egger, of Buenos Aires, Argentina; grandchildren, Bennett Lipscomb of Washington, D.C., and Francesca Egger of Buenos Aires; sisters-in-law, Mary Hughes of Fairfield, IA, and Frances Lee of San Jose, CA; and nephews, James Hughes of Newington, CT, and Thomas Lee of Singapore.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. Rev. Jack Edwards, Rev. Jack Weikel, and Rev. Janet Manning will officiate. Music will be provided by John Mullen and Louise Ammons. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the service.
