Louise Bilbo Smith, 84, of Kingsport, passed away on Monday, December 28, 2009, at Asbury Place of Kingsport.
Born January 21, 1925, in Pachuta, MS, Mrs. Smith graduated as valedictorian from Pachuta High School. She was an accomplished piano player at a young age.
Mrs. Smith graduated from Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus MS with a B. A. degree and later earned her Masters degree in Education from ETSU. She taught various courses in Hattiesburg MS and later in the English departments at John Sevier Junior High School and Dobyns-Bennett High School. She retired from the Kingsport City School system in 1990. Mrs. Smith enjoyed enriching the lives of the thousands of students she taught in her 30 year career, and particularly enjoyed teaching composition classes.
Mrs. Smith was an avid reader and music lover. She was a supporter of the arts and served on the Kingsport Symphony Orchestra Guild.
Mrs. Smith moved to Kingsport in 1954 where she met and married her beloved husband, Russell Irving Smith, Sr. They were happily married for 46 years. She was also an active member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church.
Louise Smith was beloved and will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell I. Smith Sr.; sister, Billie Zachry; and niece, Betty Zachry.
Surviving are her daughter, Dr. Carol Deats and husband John and their daughter Caroline Deats, Midland TX; son, Russell I. Smith Jr. and wife Judith, Mt. Pleasant SC; and sister, Ann Rosemond, Raymond MS.
Survivors also include extended family; Marae Rigby and husband Jim, Madison MS, Tim Rosemond, Raymond MS, Mark Rosemond and wife Sharon, Jackson MS, Dawn Vigil and husband Skip, Albuquerque NM, Dorothy Cooper, Jackson MS, Nancy Stubblefield and husband Jim, Dandridge TN, Edith Cooper, Jackson MS, Jane McNaughton and husband Jim, Nashville TN, Dr. John Robert Cooper, Houston TX, Virginia Farr and husband Robert, Jackson MS, Tom Smith and wife Anne, Newburyport MA, Linda Burnett and husband Dr. Dana Burnett, Urbanna VA, and Claire Young, St. Petersburg FL.
The family will receive friends from 11:00am to 1:00pm Saturday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:00pm with Rev. Jack P. Weikel officiating.
Graveside services will be held privately.
