Mabel Hoover Stokes

Mabel Hoover Stokes, 94 of Lexington, VA died Sunday, May 15, 2016 at her home. She was born in Ft. Blackmore, VA, the daughter of Valentine T. & Mattie Ingram Hoover. She was the wife of Martin Luther Stokes, Sr. for 56 years until his death in 2000. Mrs. Stokes had been a member of Lynn Garden and Bethel Presbyterian Churches in Kingsport and New Monmouth Presbyterian in Lexington.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, three sisters, an infant son, Larry Richard Stokes, and one granddaughter, Dr. Virginia Leigh Stokes Strickler.

Mabel is survived by her son, the Rev. Dr. Martin L. Stokes, Jr., and wife, Jane Wilson Stokes; one grandson, Christopher Michael Stokes and wife, Angela; two granddaughters, Reneé Stokes Burchfield and husband, Matt; and Mary Elizabeth Defino and husband, Dominic. She also had four great-grandchildren, Aaron Jacob Stokes, Braden Parker, Ryleigh Jane, and Hannah Grace Burchfield.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, 117 E. Charlemont Ave, Kingsport, TN. The service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Dr. Martin Stokes officiating.

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

As a courtesy to her friends in the Lexington area, a memorial service will be held at New Monmouth Presbyterian Church, 2348 West Midland Trail on Sunday, May 29 at 3:00 p.m., with the Rev. Carl Pattison and Dr. Stokes officiating.
