Kingsport, TN - Malcolm Graeme Dunn, a resident of Kingsport, TN, since 1967, died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday the 4th day of April at his home in Brookdale Rock Springs in Kingsport, TN. He was reunited with his loving wife, Louise, who passed a little more than a year before him.
Born in 1929 in Anderson, Indiana, Malcolm was a graduate of Anderson Senior High School, Anderson, IN, in 1947. He received a Science degree from Purdue University in Lafayette, IN, in 1951. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy, in which he served for almost 5 years, achieving the rank of 1st Officer, before leaving in 1956. Malcolm then attended Georgetown University, receiving his Law Degree and passing the Bar Exam in 1960.
In 1963, Malcolm was employed as a Patent Attorney with Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, NY, before transferring to Tennessee Eastman Company in Kingsport, TN, in 1967, where he worked until taking early retirement in 1987. He spent the rest of his career running a private law practice in Kingsport, while continuing patent work on the side.
While serving as Ensign, U.S. Navy, Malcolm met Louise Hall Smith, his wife to be, on June 20th, 1953, at a Girls Service Organization (GSO) dance while he was on liberty. When he returned to Naval duty, he "left his heart in San Francisco." But he didn't leave her for long, as he proposed to Louise (whom he affectionately called Weezie) after a short courtship. The happy couple married on Jan. 2, 1954, and they got to celebrate their 63rd anniversary just days before she passed on January 13th, 2017.
Malcolm was a very active member of the Kingsport Kiwanis Club, in which he achieved an amazing 50 years perfect attendance in 2017. He was awarded his 50-year pin and plaque, as well as Kiwanian of the Year! He was also a member of the German Club, as he enjoyed learning the German language. He also served as an usher for First Broad Street United Methodist Church. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, and music, among many other things.
Malcolm had a penchant for technology, and he always had a strong desire to learn new things. He had a good sense of humor, and he loved telling jokes, especially the corny ones. Above all, people were very important to him. He would always go out of his way to help people. Imperative values to him included honesty, integrity, a strong work ethic, doing one's best and doing what's right.
Malcolm was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Smith Dunn; his father, Russell Cleon Dunn, Sr.; his mother, Lois Agnes Gooding Dunn; his niece, Sara Dunn Foster; his brother-in-law, Samuel Smith, Jr.; his nephew, Peter Smith; among other beloved relatives.
