Manley L. Mitchell, 79, Kingsport, passed away on Friday, September 02, 2011 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. Manley was born in Amory, Mississippi and moved to Kingsport in 1980. He was a manager for J.C. Penney, retiring in 1992 after 40 years of service. Manley was a member of First Baptist Church of Kingsport and a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class, Veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and served on the USS Hancock.
He loved woodworking, RVing, square dancing, reading, telling stories to grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spending time with his family and friends.
Manley was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Orieta Mitchell of Kingsport; two daughters, Shirley Henkel and husband Tom of St. Augustine, Florida, Nancy Klawinski and husband Bruce of Orlando, Florida; one son, Robert Mitchell and wife Sue of McKinney, Texas; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild on the way; three sisters, Emily Odom, Sara Barton and June Wade.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport with services to follow at 11:00 a.m., Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating. Graveside services will be on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 3/265.
