Margaret Beaty Austin-Smith

Margaret Beaty Austin-Smith, 98, died at Northlake Gardens, Tucker, GA, on Monday, July 2, 2018.

She was born on July 1, 1920 in Kingsport, TN where she lived for most of her life. For 2 years during World War II she and her husband, Dale J. Austin, Sr. lived in Portsmouth, VA and worked in the Norfolk Navy Yard. In 2010, she moved to Tucker, GA to be near her son, Tom Austin, who had moved back to the United States from the mission field in South Africa. She loved being near Tom and his wife, Ann, and their 2 daughters and their families.

Margaret was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and a life-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsport. She served there as a Ruling Elder, a Deacon, President of the Women of the Church and a member of the Chancel Choir, which was led for many years by her father, R. Thomas Beaty.

Preceding her in death were her parents, R. Thomas and Sudie N. Beaty and her husbands, Dale J. Austin, Sr. and R. Emerson Smith.

She is survived by 3 children: Dale J. Austin, Jr. (Linda) of Rowlette, TX, Thomas L. Austin (Ann) of Atlanta, GA, Susan A. Shane (John) of Greenville, SC; 8 grandchildren: Monica A. Edwards (Mark), Robert B. Austin (Kim), Anthony D. Austin (Mary), Susanna A. MacTavish (Chance), Anna A. Von (David), Rebecca A. Elder (Scott), Nathaniel A. Shane (Maria), Lindsay S. Bryan (Drew); and thirteen adorable and blessed great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 100 West Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37660.

The graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at Oak Hill Memorial Park. The memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service.
