KINGSPORT - Margaret Elizabeth Cornell, born October 9, 1914 in Ingersoll, Ontario, to Harry and Irene Sutherland, entered God's Eternal Kingdom on Thursday, February 20, 2014.
On August 21, 1937, Margaret married Victor Alonzo Cornell in Detroit, Michigan. Well into her eighties, Margaret learned to use the computer so she could be connected to her family and friends. In addition to family contacts, Margaret created birthday cards for her friends at Baysmont, her Kingsport home for the past 27 years. Music was an important part of her life. As a teen she was an accomplished pianist. In her 70's, she learned to play the dulcimer and enjoyed playing with friends at Exchange Place and other local venues.
Margaret was also an accomplished seamstress and knitter. Her sons still remember the special outfits she sewed or knitted for them. She continued to knit in the First Broad Street United Methodist Church "Stitch and Pray Ministry" until illness stopped her needles a few weeks ago. Her prayer shawls and baby hats are spread with her love around our region.
Margaret is survived by sons Thomas Cornell and wife, Leelia, Greentown, IN, James Cornell and wife, Lee, Kingsport, TN, and Robert Cornell and wife, Marna, Pasadena, CA.; grandchildren Ellen Figura Sutherland, Halifax, NS, Kevin Cornell and wife, Olivia, Noblesville, IN, Craig Cornell and wife, Rachel, Corinth, TX, Brian Cornell and wife, Katherine, Vilas, NC, Susan Cleveland and husband, Chris, Geneva, Switz, Brooke Roberts and husband, Paul, Brunswick, GA, Josh Cornell and wife, Lee Ann, Alhambra, CA, and Annalisa Cornell, Long Beach, CA; fifteen great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will hold a Memorial Service at First Broad Street United Methodist Church on Wednesday, February 26 at 10 am, with the Reverends Mickey Rainwater and Jack Weikel officiating. Friends will be received following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Food Ministries or Building Fund of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, 100 East Church Circle, Kingsport, TN. 37660.
Thanks be to God for a life well lived!
