Margaret Grills, 89, of Fordtown Community, died Friday January 1, 2010 due to declining health.
A life long teacher, Miss Grills was a graduate of Sullivan High School and East Tennessee State College. She began her teaching career in Sullivan County but moved to Oak Ridge Schools in 1943. She retired from Linden Elementary School in 1986. During her career with the Oak Ridge School system she was recognized as "Tennessee Teacher of the year" in the early 1950's. Miss Grills was a Methodist.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Mary Hite Grills; brother, Ben Grills, Jr; and sister, Helen Grills Riggs.
Survivors include a niece, Jill Rich and husband Darrell; a nephew, Joe Riggs and wife Becky; four great nephews, Garrett and Alex Rich, Darren and Ben Riggs, all of Kingsport, TN.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday January 3, 2010 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
The service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday with Dr. Kenneth LaDuke and Parker J. Trent officiating.
The graveside service will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Hugh Grills, Danny Blakley and John Grills.
The family would like to thank the staff of Steadman Hills and Netherland Health Care Center for all the kindness extended during her declining health.
