Marshall Tredway Watson of Kingsport, Tennessee, died January 5, 2009, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Dr. Watson was born in 1922 in Blacksburg, Virginia, and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1943. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he received a Master's and Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Princeton University and came to work at Tennessee Eastman Company in 1949. During his career at Eastman he published numerous technical papers and was awarded several patents; worked as Division Director of the Fibers Research Division; and served as chairman of the Gordon Research Conference on Fiber Science. He retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve in 1982 and from the Eastman Chemicals Division of Eastman Kodak in 1986, though he continued with consulting work for several years afterwards.
Dr. Watson enjoyed gardening and reading and was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He had traveled extensively throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia. He was a member of the American Chemical Society; the American Association for Textile Technology; and Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. He also served for several years on the Advisory Council of the Chemistry Department at Virginia Tech.
Dr. Watson was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John Wilbur and Cora Davidson Watson; his daughter, Maria Davidson Watson; and his brothers, Dr. John Wilbur Watson, Jr. and Charles Neil Watson.
Surviving are his wife, Betty; his children, Elizabeth Rapisarda and her husband, Martin Rapisarda; Marshall Watson, Jr. M.D., and his wife, Marta Watson; his grandchildren, Maria, Kyra, and Derek Rapisarda; and his brother, Dr. Robert James Watson.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the church with The Rev. Edward James Mills III and the Rev. Marquita Hutchens officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
