Martha Meredith Slaughter

Martha Meredith Slaughter passed away February 16, 2015 after a long illness.
She was born November 5, 1924 in Hartwell, GA, to Dr. Albert Owen Meredith and Annice Poole Meredith. After graduating from college, Martha moved to Kingsport and worked for Holston Defense during WWII. She married Lt. Col.John Ritter Slaughter of Kingsport and provided a loving home to three sons and a daughter in San Antonio, Honolulu, Ft. Benning, and Ft. Bragg. After losing her husband, Ritter, Martha returned to Kingsport and was a secretary at Central and South High School. Her life was filled with many hardships, yet she remained faithful and devoted to her loved ones. Her selflessness and grace serves as an inspiration to all who were blessed to know her.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, John Ritter Slaughter, her son, Rick Slaughter, her sister, Elizabeth Leard, and her brother, Dr. Owen Meredith.

She is survived by two sons, John Slaughter and his wife, Marcia of Myrtle Beach, SC, Perry Slaughter and his wife, Maureen of Houston, TX, and a daughter, Ava Olterman. Also surviving are grandchildren Sarah Rice, Jodi Berry, Bonnie Olterman, John Slaughter, Andrew Slaughter; and her great-grandchildren Olivia Rice, Grant Rice, and Davis Berry.

A funeral service for Martha Slaughter will be held at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church Friday, February 20th. Visitation with her family will begin at 11:00 followed by the service at 1:00. The burial will follow at Colonial Heights Methodist Church Cemetery (Lebanon Cemetery).

Martha's family would like to acknowledge the many caregivers that have blessed her life during her illness. These include Edith Rose, Sandy Hall, and the devoted workers at Preston Place II and Asbury Place.
