Martha Stout

Martha Hinkle Stout passed away Monday, September 8, 2008. She was born in Williamsburg, Kentucky, September 18, 1916, and later moved to Harlan County, KY. She and her husband "Dick" Stout moved to Kingsport in 1948, and were co-owners and co-founders of Oakwood Super Markets.

She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Kingsport until failing health prevented her attending. Martha was also very active in the Democratic Party. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, watching UT football, Braves' baseball, and helping her twin sister, Mary, at the Jan-Mar Restaurant. She was deeply devoted to her family, and will be greatly missed.

Martha was preceded in death by her devoted husband, James A. "Dick" Stout; three brothers, an infant Hinkle, John Hinkle and Eugene Hinkle; three sisters, Pearlina Merlotte, Nannie Greene, and her twin sister, Mary Greene of Kingsport.

Survivors include one son, Dorman L. Stout and his wife Mary Ann, of Kingsport; grandchildren Rebecca Birch and husband Garry, of Kingsport, Lamarr Stout and his wife Susie, of Knoxville, Jim Stout and his wife Becky B., of Charlotte, NC; great-grandchildren Melissa and Sarah Jordan Stout, of Knoxville, Abby and James Stout, of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Gladys Stanaford, of Atlanta, GA; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family is deeply grateful to the nurses and staff at Church Hill Health Care and Rehab Center for their constant and loving care of Martha.

A family graveside burial service will be held Friday at Oak Hill Memorial Park, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Chapel, with Dr. Ron Davis of First Baptist Church, Kingsport, officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service.
