Mary Alice Browder, 83, of Kingsport, died Tuesday morning November 17, 2009 at Asbury Center at Baysmont after a brief illness. She was born in Sullivan County where she resided most of her life. Mary Alice retired from the Sullivan County School System in 1992 after over 30 years of service as a math teacher. She taught at Holston High School, Sullivan High School, Dobyns-Bennett, Colonial Heights Junior High, Sullivan Central High School, and Sullivan South High School. Mary Alice was active as a coach/sponsor of the Scholars Bowl. She was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church where she was active in the United Methodist Women's Circle #2 and other church activities. In addition, she volunteered as a long-time cook for Meals on Wheels.
Mary Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Browder; son-in-law, Eddie White; and sister, Annie Laurie Dickson.
She is survived by her daughter, Martha White of Kingsport; son, Marty Browder and wife Alice of Kingsport; grandchildren, John and Jason White, Charlie, Jack, Susannah, and Sam Browder; great-grandchildren, Haley, Allison, Drew, Riley, and Levi; sister, Dorothy "Dot" Hawk of Blountville; one niece, Kitty Hawk Loewen; one nephew, Jim Hawk; and several great-nieces and a great-nephew.
The family will receive friends on Thursday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
A graveside service, officiated by Rev. Jack P. Weikel, will be held on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
