Mary Virginia Chalker, 96, of 440 High Ridge Road, graduated to heaven on Monday, January 11, 2010, at Church Hill Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Mary Virginia was born February 7, 1913, in Jackson, TN. She lived a glorious life as a fine example of a godly Christian lady who supported and nurtured her family, friends, and neighbors.
During World War II she worked as a nurse in a Jackson, TN, hospital. After the war she worked as a surgeon's office nurse in a local clinic. In 1955 she moved from Jackson, TN, to Forrest City, AR, where she worked with her husband in his Tom's Snack Foods distributorship until he retired in 1972. In 1983 she and her husband moved to Kingsport to be with their daughter and grandchildren.
She was a member of the Women of the Moose for many years. In Jackson, she served as Senior Regent.
She was active in the Forrest City Gideons Auxiliary in the distribution of Bibles in schools. In Forrest City, she was a charter member and past president of the Forrest City Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Delphian Literary Club and Forrest City Garden Club. At Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church in Forrest City she served as an elder, Sunday School teacher, circle chairman, and youth leader. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Kingsport, where she served as elder, president of the Women of the Church, and circle chairman.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Leroy Chalker; her parents, Jim Dick and Clara Gardner Long; two brothers, James Gardner Long and J.D. Long; and a sister, Alice Josephine DeLoach.
She is survived by one daughter, Florence Godat, of Kingsport; two grandchildren, Dr. Mitchel Godat and wife Paige, of Memphis, TN, and Christine Henry and husband Miles, of Burnsville, NC; two great-granddaughters, Kateland and Charlotte Godat; two great-grandsons, Gavin and Theo Henry; and two sisters, Sadie James and Zelma Burkeen, both of Jackson, TN.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Services will be conducted on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
