Mary Ruth Chambers, 93, of Kingsport, died Thursday May 31, 2012in Boone, NC.

Born in Rye Cove, VA, on November 18th, 1918, Mary Ruth survived the 1929 tornadoa€"which leveled the school building she was in when the storm hit. Her family then lived briefly in Jenkins, KY, before moving to Kingsporta€"where she graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1937.

Having a longstanding interest in health, and following in her father's footsteps, she went on to graduate from O'Neal Ross Chiropractic College. On November 5th, 1940, she married Clayton E. Chambersa€"who also became a chiropractor upon his return from service in WWII in Europe.

Both Mary Ruth and Clayton E. Chambers practiced chiropractic with her father at his offices on Sullivan Street in downtown Kingsport, where her family also resided when they first moved to Kingsport. Their practice, Appalachian Chiropractic, continues to this day.

The Chambers lived in Kingsport where the raised two sons, Tom and Ron. It was shortly before their 50th wedding anniversary that Clayton died in 1990. Mary Ruth continued to live in Kingsport except for the last 18 months, when she was in Boone, NC.

She was preceded by her parents, Samuel Earnest Dishner and Phoebe Ethel Gillenwater Dishner, and by her husband, Dr. Clayton E. Chambers.

Survivors include her sons, Ron Chambers and his wife, Brenda of Todd, NC, and Tom Chambers and his wife Rachel of Sarasota, FL; and two grandchildren, Cassandra Wagner and her husband James of Louisburg, NC, and Josh Chambers of Blacksburg, VA.

The family will receive friends Tuesday June 5, 2012 from noon - 2 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson in Kingsport. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jack P. Weikel officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park.
